Waking up one morning only to realize that you get into a career rut and feel terribly unhappy about your job is one of the most frustrating moments we don’t want to experience. So, to avoid finding yourself in the wrong line of work, try the following guidelines and reflect.
1. Don't pick your career from what someone else is doing. You have to pick a career that completely fits you and your lifestyle. It should be something that will suit your interests, personality, priorities, values and happiness.
2. Learn about your career options. Research. Read handouts about career options related to your course. Ask your college's career counselors. Listen to career orientations. Try out careers by taking internships or part-time jobs. The more career planning that you can do as a student, the better prepared you will be when you start to look for your first job.
3. Assess yourself. Whatever it is that you learn about yourself, you're making important discoveries that will help you choose a good career when the time comes.
