Low-carbohydrate diets or low carb diets are nutritional programs that advocate restricted carbohydrate consumption, based on research that ties consumption of certain carbohydrates with increased blood insulin levels, and overexposure to insulin with metabolic syndrome (the most recognized symptom of which is obesity).Under these dietary programs, foods high in digestible carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are limited or replaced with foods containing a higher percentage of proteins, fats, and/or fiber. And the notion of “No White Foods” is a fairly popular low carb diet, means simply eliminating sugars, white flour, white rice, and potatoes. There are five low carb diets in demand today: Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power, Sugar Busters and Zone.

Atkins

The Atkins Nutritional Approach, popularly known as Atkins Diet or simply Atkins is the most marketed and well-known low carbohydrate diets. It has been highly successful due to the popularity of the diet, and is considered the iconic and driving entity of the larger "low-carb craze.” The diet restricts the consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods and encourages the consumption of protein and fat.

South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is not a traditional low-carb plan. Instead, you'll be encouraged to choose the right carbs, the right fats and lean sources of protein. It emphasizes carbohydrate foods with a low glycemic index and fats that do not raise blood cholesterol. Like the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet begins with an initial phase of very low carbohydrate intake; but it only allows foods low in unhealthful fats.

Protein Power

This plan relies on knowing how much carbohydrate is in everything you eat. Getting enough protein is crucial to the success of the diet.

Zone Diet

It advocates balancing protein and carbohydrate ratios instead of caloric thinking as an approach to eating. The diet centers on a "40:30:30" ratio of calories obtained daily from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, respectively. It is the ideal for keeping insulin levels in check. Normalizing these levels can eliminate food cravings, which translate to: a balanced diet eradicates our unhealthy desire for food.

Sugar Busters

This plan works in a similar way as the Zone diet but it generally focuses on eliminating foods containing refined carbohydrates as well as naturally-occurring carbohydrates rating high on the glycemic index. The Sugar Busters Diet recommends that 40% of daily calorie intake is made up of fat, 30% is made up of protein, and the final 30% is made up of carbohydrates (Zone diet follows the same 40/30/30 ratio only to differ in carbohydrates–40% and fat–30%).

Indulging yourselves to one of the low carb diet plans known in the market could be self-fulfilling but be sure on following the program by heart because executing it the right way could help you reach your goal.
